This month, we're thrilled to announce the introduction of a more efficient and enjoyable mapping experience with the option for users to draw their own beds directly in Hortis— Botanical GIS is finally here. We're also excited to participate as sponsors at two October events: the upcoming American Public Garden Association Plant Collections Symposium in Chicago and the Annual Association of Zoological Horticulture Conference in Phoenix.
A garden map is only truly useful when all your plants are mapped, but mapping all the plants in your collection is a time-consuming and daunting task. To alleviate this problem, we have now introduced the option to draw your own bed locations directly in Hortis. Mapped locations simplify the finding of associated plants without the need to plot their exact positions. Furthermore, free map services lack the refinement gardens need, and though professional GIS/Mapping tools are powerful, they often come with overwhelming complexity and extra costs. With the newest update, you can draw more details on the base map yourself, without having to learn new and complicated tools.

We hosted a webinar on October 2nd as part of this release and the recording will be shared with you all as soon as it is available.
Jamie attended the Plantnetwork Plant Records Group meeting last month at the stunning Ness Botanic Gardens, hosted by Nick Lightfoot (Curator) and Mike Roberts (Plant Records Officer). It was an engaging day filled with activities, including an introduction to the auditing process at Ness and a hands-on exercise in the field, offering a fresh perspective on their workflow. Nick and Mike also led a wonderful tour of the gardens, and the day concluded with an insightful talk on mapping from Lee Betts of the National Trust. The Plantnetwork focuses on plant conservation and cultivation across the UK and Ireland, connecting public gardens and botanical institutions. To learn more visit https://plantnetwork.org/.
We are excited about the upcoming symposium hosted by the American Public Garden Association together with Chicago Botanic Garden and Morton Arboretum. The event, titled 'Purposeful Plant Collections in a Changing World,' will focus on innovations in plant records technology, mapping, and adapting to evolving natural and social environments. The symposium will explore how new technologies can help further develop collections for the future. We hope to see you in Chicago on October 8th and 9th.
